Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective created by the author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He is known for his logical reasoning and the ability to solve difficult cases using his forensic skills. He was first noticed in 1887 and he appeared in four novels and fifty six stories.

Childhood and growing up years:

Sherlock Holmes was said to be born in the year 1854. He was the nephew of the French artist Emilie Jean Horace Vernet.  His elder brother was Mycroft Holmes who was born in 1847. It is said that he attended one of the top most universities in London. He had developed his detective skills as an undergraduate and he started his career at the age of twenty.

Claim to fame

Sherlock Holmes had started his career with his well known companion Dr Watson. Dr Watson was known to have assisted Holmes in most of his cases. In the story “A Study in Scarlet”, Watson narrated his adventures with the detective. The other stories of Holmes include “The sign of the four” and “The adventure of the crooked man” etc.

Sherlock Holmes is known to take up any kind of disguise such that even Watson is unable to recognize him. This is clearly illustrated in the stories such as “The man with the twisted lip, The adventure of Charles August Millerton” and The adventure of the empty house”. He was known to possess an analytical brain in most of the cases.

Sherlock Holmes met his death in the year 1891 at the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland while engaged in a bitter combat with his mortal enemy Professor Moriarty. Both of them had fallen to the bottom of the falls apparently. But surprisingly Holmes manages to escape and he appears in the story “The adventure of the empty house”.

In the story “His last bow, Holmes retires to a farm in Sussex Downs. It is here that he develops a hobby of beekeeping. But the details of his death are not specified.
